Guadeloupe: Protesters clash with police early Jan. 21; unrest likely to continue in coming days /update 1
Protesters build roadblocks, clash with police in Guadeloupe early Jan. 21. Protests and disruptions likely to continue in coming days.
Event
Demonstrations against COVID-19-related measures, such as a COVID-19 health pass and vaccination requirements, are likely to continue across Guadeloupe in the coming days. Activists have burned debris to block roads and continued to clash with police in multiple locations across Guadeloupe as of early Jan. 21. During the unrest, at least one police officer was shot and injured. While the demonstrations have been particularly disruptive in Les Abymes, Pointe-a-Pitre, Sainte Rose, and Goyave, additional protests are likely across the island.
Demonstrators have staged several protests in Guadeloupe and will probably attempt to continue to block main roads in the coming days. Further clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible, particularly if authorities attempt to disperse gatherings. Police have fired tear gas and used water hoses on demonstrators in previous demonstrations. Demonstrators may attempt to close fuel stations on the island. Transport and business disruptions are likely near protest sites.
Context
Major protests occurred in Guadeloupe November-December 2021 in opposition to COVID-19 measures. In January, tensions resurfaced, following a protest action Jan. 4 by opponents of vaccine mandates, who took over the entrance of the University Hospital Center (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire) and attacked several hospital employees.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Confirm private transport and business appointments. Avoid unnecessary travel. If you encounter a roadblock, do not attempt to cross it; seek alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen the road.
