Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan: Heightened security likely along shared border after shooting incidents between border guards reported Jan. 27

Heightened security likely on border between Batken Province, Kyrgyzstan, and Sughd Province, Tajikistan, after shooting incidents Jan. 27.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely along the border between Kyrgyzstan's Batken Province and Tajikistan's Sughd Province through at least late January after exchanges of fire between the two countries' border guards were reported near Tort-Kocha and Chyr-Dobo Jan. 27. The shooting reportedly started after Tajik citizens closed part of the Batken-Isfana road in the Tort-Kocha area. The fighting left at least six people wounded.

Transport disruptions are likely in the affected areas over the coming days; checkpoints may be erected on roads in areas near the shared border. Further violence remains possible; any such fighting will pose an incidental physical threat to bystanders.

Advice

Consider avoiding nonessential travel to areas of Kyrgyzstan's Batken Province and Tajikistan's Sughd Province near the shared border until the situation has stabilized. If operating in the border area, exercise heightened vigilance. Allow additional time for cross-border travel and for travel in areas near the shared border; carry relevant identification documents, and remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security forces. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a confrontation.
