Severe weather forecast across western and central Greece through at least Feb. 17. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.
Event
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast across western and central Greece through at least Feb. 17.
As of Feb. 16, authorities have issued the following weather warnings across Greece:
Orange heavy rainfall warnings (the second-highest level on a three-tier scale): Ionian Islands.
Yellow heavy rainfall warnings: Attica, east Peloponnese, east Sterea and Evia, and Thessaly regions.
Yellow thunderstorm warnings: Attica, Epirus, east and west Peloponnese, east Sterea and Evia, west Sterea, and Thessaly regions, as well as the Ionian Islands.
Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.
Hazardous Conditions
The adverse weather could see rounds of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and isolated thunderstorm activity across western and central Greece in the coming days. Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil. Power outages could occur throughout the affected area.
Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the affected regions. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports in the affected regions.
Advice
Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
