Officials report increased volcanic activity at Mount Ontake, Chubu Region, Japan, Feb. 23; volcanic alert level raised.
Event
Officials have raised the warning for Mount Ontake, which straddles Nagano and Gifu prefectures in Chubu Region, from Level 1 to Level 2 Feb. 23 due to increased activity at the volcano. Under the Level 2 warning, authorities advise against approaching the proximity of the crater from Otaki village and Kiso town in Nagano Prefecture and from Gero City in Gifu Prefecture. Officials have also warned of potential cascading volcanic rocks within a 1 km (0.6 mile) radius of the crater. Around 80 tremors were observed at the volcano between 14:00 and 15:00 JST Feb. 23. This is the first time since 2017 that the alert level has been raised to Level 2.
Transport
Plan for possible transport disruptions in the surrounding area, especially if a significant eruptive event occurs. Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibility could be reduced. Officials might close roads near the volcano depending on the presence of hazardous volcanic material. Fine particulate matter ejected from the volcano could pose a hazard to flights in the surrounding airspace. Authorities might temporarily close airport facilities if significant ashfall accumulations occur.
Advice
Confirm flights if a large eruption occurs. Plan for possible transportation disruptions if operating near Mount Ontake in the coming days. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving; due to reduced visibility, drive cautiously in areas affected by ash. Carry masks or face coverings and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation if operating in the affected area.
