Strong winds and heavy rainfall are forecast across most of Costa Rica through at least March 4. As of March 1, the Meteorological Institute of Costa Rica has warned of strong winds through at least March 4 and heavy rainfall March 2-4, especially over the Alajuela, Heredia, and Limon provinces March 3-4. Cool conditions and occasional light rain is forecast over the eastern and northern portions of the Central Valley region March 3. Authorities advise residents in the Greater Metropolitan Area, Guanacaste Province, and mountain ranges to be vigilant for strong gusts of wind. Residents in Alajuela, Heredia, and Limon provinces should be vigilant for the impacts of heavy rainfall.
The strong winds could damage roofs, electrical infrastructure, signs, and trees. Residents are advised to avoid burning of any kind as the fire could easily get out of control due to the windy conditions. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.
Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.
Strong winds might pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports in the region. If strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions, authorities may temporarily suspend port operations or close beach fronts.
