Bangladesh: Celebrations to take place nationwide, especially Dhaka, through March 31 for Independence Day

Bangladesh to celebrate Independence Day through March 31. Tight security and localized disruptions highly likely, especially in Dhaka regio

Warning

Event

Bangladesh is celebrating the 51st anniversary of its independence through March 31. The country is commemorating national holidays for founder Sheik Mujibur Rahman's birthday March 17 and Independence Day March 26. Government offices and most commercial establishments will likely close for the holidays. Most of the programs commemorating Rahman’s birthday March 17 have occurred in his birthplace, Tungipara. The Awami League will hold events in Tungipara through at least March 23. Further events by various political parties and organizations are likely in major cities, especially in the Dhaka region, where gatherings are likely at Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho (National Martyrs' Monument) in Savar, the National Parade Square, and Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Smaller ceremonies will likely take place in provincial capitals and district headquarters throughout the country during the period. Bangladesh will also observe Genocide Remembrance Day by holding memorial events and a one-minute nationwide blackout 21:00 March 25; lighting must remain switched off at all premises except key infrastructure and emergency facilities.

Opposition parties and other groups may organize street marches and public. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other groups could still rally in Dhaka and at the district and upazila level nationwide and prompt localized traffic disruptions. Clashes with police cannot be ruled out during any protest. Security forces typically use force to disperse protests.

Security forces will likely be on heightened alert nationwide through March 31. Extremely tight security is almost certain, especially near Independence Day events in Dhaka and surrounding areas. Increased security is also likely around vital installations, including government buildings, police and military facilities, major hotels, markets, and transport hubs. Road closures, vehicle searches, and traffic disruptions are highly likely near celebration venues. Authorities have not publicized any information about potential terror attacks; however, the threat from terrorism remains high in Bangladesh, and the symbolic significance of Independence Day makes it an attractive target for militants.

Advice

Heed all instructions from security personnel. Consider restricting public movements March 26. If operating in Dhaka, limit activity during the celebration period ending March 31. Avoid Independence Day events, demonstrations, and large crowds. Plan accordingly for possible street closures and detours; monitor local media for updates. Allow additional time to reach destinations, especially in Dhaka and surrounding areas. Confirm road conditions and flight schedules and allow significant extra time if departing Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC).
