Moldova: Increased security planned during May 9 Victory Day/Europe Day events

Authorities to deploy increased security in Moldova during May 9 Victory Day/Europe Day events. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Moldova have deployed increased security in advance of the nation's dual observance of Victory Day and Europe Day, both of which fall on May 9. Various political and civil society groups will stage marches, rallies, and other events during the commemoration. The largest gatherings will take place in Chisinau; organizers have announced the following specific events in the nation's capital:

  • Immortal Regiment march sponsored by several political parties from 08:00-12:00 through streets in central Chisinau;

  • Europe Day celebration by veterans' groups at Great National Assembly Square starting at 08:00;

  • Victory Day motor vehicle rally starting at Great National Assembly Square and proceeding along main thoroughfares through central Chisinau.

Related gatherings will also take place in the cities of Anenii Noi, Balti, Cahul, and Comrat.

While most of the events will probably remain peaceful, localized confrontations cannot be ruled out if supporters of rival pro-Russia and pro-Europe groups assemble in close proximity to each other. Tensions between the two factions are elevated due to Russia's ongoing invasion of neighboring Ukraine, as well as the Moldovan government's recently implemented ban on the display of symbols associated with the Russian military, such as the ribbon of Saint George. An increased police presence will be deployed near all event locations, as well as at Moldova's international border crossing points. Significant traffic congestion is likely near rally venues; public transport could operate on modified routes or schedules.

Advice

Check route status before traveling on May 9, particularly in Chisinau. Plan routes to avoid scheduled rallies or marches and allow additional time for travel in city centers. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
