Mali: Fuel shortages likely nationwide through late May

Fuel shortages likely across Mali through end of May amid supply disruptions and strike by petrol station employees.

Informational

Event

Fuel shortages are likely to persist nationwide through at least late May due to supply disruptions and amid an ongoing strike by select petrol station employees. Gas station attendants employed by Total, Ola-Energy, Shell, and Oryx companies embarked May 15 on a five-day strike to demand better salaries and working conditions. Striking staff may launch an indefinite strike if their demands are not met by May 20. Fuel scarcity has prompted increased demand at available fuel stations and price hikes. Some stations have also reportedly run out of stock, notably in Bamako.

Related protests remain possible, notably if fuel scarcity and high prices persist. The government has recently ordered fuel trucks to meet the demand; it is unclear if the supply will be sufficient. Officials will likely deploy security personnel to any protest locations. Should protests occur, localized traffic disruptions are likely, and the potential for clashes with security forces or angry commuters is elevated.

Advice

Plan for fuel shortages and queues at gas stations. Confirm ground transport services before travel. Avoid all demonstrations.
