Solomon Islands: Government to host Chinese foreign minister May 25-27
Solomon Islands to host Chinese foreign minister May 25-27. Increased security likely. Protests, localized disruptions possible.
Event
Solomon Islands will host Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Honiara May 25-27. The foreign minister will likely arrive at Honiara International Airport (HIR) the evening of May 25 and hold several high-level meetings May 26. Wang could visit the Prime Minister's Office, Government House, and the Chinese Embassy. The foreign minister will likely depart the country early May 27 from HIR.
Demonstrations may occur during Wang's visit. Activists opposed to enhanced bilateral ties with China could protest in Honiara and surrounding areas of Guadalcanal or Malaita Province. Rallies will probably remain small if they occur; activists have previously protested outside the parliament and Chinatown in Honiara. Vandalism and arson cannot be ruled out if larger demonstrations take place and could lead to business closures.
Increased security is likely near sites hosting official events for the foreign minister. Tight security is almost certain near HIR as Wang arrives and departs the country. Police may temporarily block roads near event venues, causing localized transport disruptions.
Advice
If operating in Honiara, consider avoiding venues unless attending events. Plan for localized transport disruptions; allow additional time to reach destinations through the morning of May 27. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
