Chile: Authorities extend state of emergency in Araucania and Biobio regions through June 30
Chile extends state of emergency in Araucania Region and two provinces of Biobio Region through June 30. Heightened security likely.
Event
The Chilean government has extended its existing state of emergency in Araucania Region and in the provinces of Biobio and Arauco in Biobio Region through at least June 30. The state of emergency was initially declared May 17 due to criminal activity affecting main thoroughfares in the areas in question.
Under the state of emergency, the military leaders assigned to these areas have the authority to permit or prohibit public gatherings and oversee the entry to, exit from, and transit through their designated areas of responsibility. They can also impose security measures to protect public services and key infrastructure.
The emergency measures could result in some ground travel and business disruptions. Protests in response to the action are also possible. Any gatherings - particularly those that take place without official permission - could result in clashes with security forces.
Advice
Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Confirm appointments in areas subject to the state of emergency. Consider deferring nonessential travel in the affected regions until the situation stabilizes and the state of emergency is lifted. Avoid all protests.
