Uruguay: Unionized port workers strike in Montevideo July 5

Unionized port workers strike in Montevideo, Uruguay, July 5; shipping disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Unionized port workers affiliated with the Single National Union of Sea and Allied Workers (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores del Mar y Afines, SUNTMA) are striking in Montevideo July 5. Participants will stop operating all REYLA vessels at Montevideo Port through 19:00 July 5. Additionally, participants will stop work activities for all vessels in the port between 09:00 and 13:00 July 5. The purpose of the strike is to demand improved working conditions and safety measures following the death of a port employee in late June.

Striking workers could stage protests and pickets outside of port facilities as part of their action. Localized ground transport disruptions are possible in the vicinity of port facilities. Maritime transport disruptions and processing delays could extend for several days after the strike ends as port authorities work to clear any container backlog. Further strikes are also possible in the coming days.

Advice

Allow additional time when routing freight through Montevideo Port during the strike action; consider alternative shipping methods for critical cargoes. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate possible disruption.
