Puerto Rico: Power outages occurring nationwide, Aug. 17

Power outages occurring across Puerto Rico due to problems at a generator plant Aug. 17.

Warning

Event

Power outages are occurring throughout Puerto Rico, Aug. 17, following a problem at a generator plant in Guayama. More than 215,000 customers are without electricity in several areas of the country, including Caguas, San Juan, Carolina, and Bayamon.

Officials have not given an estimate as to when the service will be restored, but disruptions are likely to continue through at least late Aug. 17. Disruptions to business and communications are almost certain to impact blackout-affected areas. Malfunctioning traffic signals may result in transport disruptions and longer driving times. The electrical grid collapse may also cause services at some essential facilities, such as ATMs and filling stations, to be temporarily unavailable.

Advice

Plan accordingly for power supply disruptions. Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies until power is restored. Exercise caution when driving or crossing streets in areas where traffic signals are malfunctioning.
