Power outages occurring in Puerto Rico, US, following power grid failure as of Sept 18. Disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Event

As of Sept. 18, a power outage is affecting the entire island of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Fiona caused the island's power transmission grid to fail. Authorities did not immediately comment on when electrical services would be reinstated.

Disruptions to business and communications are almost certain to impact Puerto Rico over the coming days. Malfunctioning traffic signals may result in transport disruptions and longer driving times. The electrical grid collapse may also cause services at some essential facilities, such as ATMs and filling stations, to be temporarily unavailable.

Advice

Charge battery-powered devices when electricity is available; restrict the use of cellular phones to emergencies only. Power down mobile devices when not in use until power is restored. Exercise caution when driving or crossing streets in areas where traffic signals are malfunctioning.
