Activists affiliated with the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) will stage nationwide protests beginning Jan. 26 to demand several concessions, including the release of allegedly detained journalists. As a part of their action, PFUJ members will hold rallies at press clubs across the country 12:00-15:00 Jan. 26. If the organizers' demands remain unmet by Jan. 29, protesters will rally at Islamabad's National Press Club from 15:00 Jan. 30 and march toward Parliament House, where they will hold an indefinite sit-in demonstration. Demonstrators may hold additional gatherings, especially near other major press clubs, public squares, government buildings, or thoroughfares. Well-attended rallies are likely to draw hundreds of participants.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security near rally sites and may attempt to forcibly disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Protesters may march along or block major roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible near larger demonstrations.
