Myanmar: Union Day to occur nationwide Feb. 12
Myanmar to mark National Day Feb. 12. Tight security likely at events. Clashes between authorities and anti-military activists possible.
Event
Myanmar will commemorate Union Day Feb. 12. The largest events in Yangon will take place at the People's Square and Park near the Yangon Region Parliament compound. Authorities will close Pyay Road 04:00-08:00 through Feb. 12; other traffic diversions are possible at short notice. Official events could also occur in the capital Naypyidaw at government buildings like the Presidential Palace. Government office and business closures are likely Feb. 12.
Anti-military activists may stage demonstrations, and clashes with security personnel are possible. Likely gathering sites include prominent roadways and parks. Security incidents, including explosions involving crude bombs, are possible in urban centers such as Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Yangon; past incidents have targeted the facilities of the military or people and organizations with alleged connections to the armed forces.
Authorities will almost certainly heighten security at events and prominent celebration sites and transport hubs as a precaution. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Increased petty crime is typically an issue during large-scale events.
Advice
Avoid any event sites, demonstrations, government buildings, security installations, and large concentrations of police and soldiers through Feb. 12 as a precaution. Monitor local developments, especially rally plans, closely, as organizers may not announce details in advance. If a demonstration forms nearby, immediately leave the area, seek shelter at a safe non-government building, and stay away from windows. Remain polite and cooperative if stopped by security personnel for security checks. Heed all official security and traffic advisories. Closely guard valuables in crowded areas. Confirm all official and business appointments Feb. 12.
