A magnitude-6.1 earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea north of the Tanimbar Islands, Maluku Province, at around 18:37 Feb. 17. The epicenter was about 131 km (81 miles) southwest of Tual. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 38 km (24 miles), and moderate-to-light shaking was probably felt throughout parts of southern and eastern Maluku Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light-to-moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
