Security forces fired tear gas, water cannons, and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of anti-government protesters in Bishkek on Monday, March 2. The demonstrators were reportedly moving toward the government headquarters after rallying in a central square in the capital. The protest was organized to demand the release of Sadyr Zhaparov, a former presidential adviser who was sentenced to over 11 years in prison for taking a government official hostage in 2013. The number of demonstrators arrested in the demonstration was not immediately reported.

A heightened security presence and lingering disruptions to traffic and business are possible near the demonstration site over the coming hours. Similar protests are possible in Bishkek over the coming days.
