Continued flooding in Java affects 25,000 as of April 15; associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Heavy rains over the island of Java, ongoing since Thursday, April 9, have caused widespread flooding and landslides, affecting more than 25,000 people as of Wednesday, April 15. Over 7500 houses have been flooded, alongside several major roads. The Tuban, Lamongan, and Bungo regencies have been particularly badly affected.

Heavy rains are expected to continue over the island until Friday, April 17, with especially heavy rains and thunderstorms expected over East Java.

Associated landslides, storm surge, and transportation and business disruptions are anticipated, as well as disruptions to power and communication services in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
