Two incidents of police violence in the Oromia region on Saturday, February 15, reportedly left one person dead and several others arrested. The casualty was reported in a raid on an Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) opposition office after which police arrested and allegedly beat about 30 people in a nearby stadium.

Similar violence is possible in the near term.

Context

According to Amnesty International, police forces have increasingly used intimidation amid the upcoming legislative elections, due on August 29.

Former Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rebels continue to operate in Oromia region despite the group's leadership agreeing to a ceasefire in July 2018.
