Activists in Luanda call for anti-government demonstrations November 21

Event

Activists have called for a protest in Luanda on Saturday, November 21, to denounce perceived corruption in the government. Protesters will gather from 12:00 (local time) on Saturday at the Largo da Independencia in the capital.

Further anti-government protests are to be anticipated across Angola over the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Context

Anti-government demonstrations on October 24 denouncing the alleged high cost of living resulted in clashes between security forces and protesters, with dozens arrested. The Provincial Court of Luanda sentenced 71 activists arrested on October 24 on charges of unrest and damage to property, among other things, who face fines. Twenty-one detainees were released without charge on Sunday. Several demonstrations were held outside of the Provincial Court of Luanda from October 25 and throughout the sentencing of those detained.
