India: Heavy rains expected in the south until October 7

Heavy rainfall expected to affect several southern states until October 7

Warning

Event

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several southern states, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala - which are currently under "orange alert" - as well as parts of Karnataka. The worst of this rainy weather episode is expected to hit Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Sunday, October 7. In anticipation, both regions on that day have been placed under "red alert," the highest alert level on a four-tier scale. Thunderstorms and violent winds are also expected in the aforementioned areas, along with high waves along the coast.

Context

India experiences severe rain during the monsoon season (June to October). Monsoon rains frequently cause flooding, landslides, interruptions in telecommunications, population evacuations, and transportation disruptions.

Advice

Individuals present in the above mentioned areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, expect transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Do not attempt to drive on a flooded road. Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
