Transportation disruptions are likely in Delhi from January 18-26, ahead of Republic Day; heightened security presence and associated disruptions expected
Event
India will celebrate Republic Day on January 26. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) reportedly issued a NOTAM on Sunday, January 12, regarding operations at Delhi's International Airport (DEL) on Saturday, January 18, Monday, January 20, through Friday, January 24, and Sunday, January 26, due to dress-rehearsals and celebrations. The NOTAM prohibits landing and take-off between 10:35 and 12:15 (local time) on the aforementioned dates.
The main Republic Day parade is scheduled at 09:30 on January 26, at Delhi's Rajpath, before proceeding to the Red Fort. Metro and train disruptions are expected while transport authorities are due to close some stations and operate modified schedules. Increased security measures are anticipated in Delhi, particularly near the parade as many senior political figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to attend.
Similar celebratory and commemorative events are anticipated in major urban areas throughout India, including in Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkota, and Chennai. A heightened security presence, transportation, and business disruptions are expected near any celebratory or commemorative event.
Context
India celebrates January 26 as Republic Day to mark the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950.
Advice
Individuals in Delhi or traveling via DEL, and in India more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, as well as local customs and laws. Anticipate crowded travel conditions, including at airports, rail stations, and on roads, avoid large public gatherings as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation and business disruptions - including flight delays and cancelations.
