Burkina Faso: Unions maintain strike through March 20 /update 1

Public sector unions maintain strike from March 16-20 after suspending a march planned on March 17; associated business and transportation disruptions expected

A coalition of public sector unions is holding a nationwide strike in Burkina Faso as of Tuesday, March 17. The work stoppage began on Monday, March 16, and is expected to last through Friday, March 20. During the strike, minimum service will be provided in the health, energy, and transportation sectors, but other associated disruptions are expected nationwide. A nationwide march that was originally scheduled for Tuesday has also been suspended. However, the unions may hold other demonstrations and rallies over the coming days.

Union leaders have threatened to carry out further industrial actions, including a strike without guaranteed minimum service, if the government does not meet their demands by Friday.

Union leaders are denouncing planned wage cuts by the government. The organizations are also demanding that the government respect the rights and freedoms of the unions.

Individuals in Burkina Faso are advised to monitor developments, avoid demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate disruptions to administrative services, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
