Thailand: Pro-democracy activists call for protest in Bangkok on December 2 /update 26

Event

Pro-democracy activists plan to hold further protests in Bangkok on Wednesday, December 2, when the Constitutional Court will issue its verdict on whether Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha will remain eligible to serve in his current capacity. The People's Party activist group plan to hold a rally outside the Court on Chaeng Watthana Road which is expected to be well attended. The group has claimed that the PM has abused his power by staying in an army residence at the Royal Guard's First Infantry Battalion despite being retired from the military in 2014. The PM claims that he has stayed in the military housing for security reasons. 

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the demonstrations and clashes between security forces, protesters, and counter-protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Public opposition has grown against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in recent months over government spending, the dissolution of an opposition party, and many other factors. Activists have also called for reforms to the powers of the monarchy. Protests on an increasing scale have been held in Bangkok and other locations across Thailand in recent months. Counter protests have also been held, particularly in support of the monarchy.
