Reports of at least two protesters killed amid demonstrations in Maai Mahiu (Nakuru County) on November 9-10; further protests possible, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution

At least two protesters were killed and several others were injured during clashes between protesters and local police which took place on Tuesday, November 10, in Maai Mahiu (Nakuru County). Sand harvesters reportedly staged protests against local ranch owners following hiked quarry fees for sand harvesting. The protesters in the area erected at least 20 roadblocks and demanded money from motorists in order to allow them access through. Transport along the Nairobi-Naivasha and Nairobi-Narok highways were disrupted for several hours on Tuesday amid the unrest. Police were deployed to intervene and reports suggest they fired at the protesters and arrested at least 15 people. Similar demonstrations were reported on Monday, November 9.

Normalcy has since returned to the town, though a heavy police presence remains and further associated protests are possible.
