The United States Geological Survey observed an underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale roughly 54 km (33 mi) south-southwest of Tanaga Volcano in the Aleutian Islands (Alaska) at 08:47 (local time) on Saturday, January 5. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 19 km (11 mi) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any alert as of 08:57. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.
