Somalia: US airstrikes target Al-Shabaab militants near Kobon (Lower Juba region) April 9 and near Jilib (Middle Juba region) April 10

Event

The US Air Force conducted an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants to support operations by the Somali National Army and Jubaland Security Forces near Kobon (Lower Juba region) on Thursday, April 9. The air force conducted a second airstrike against Al-Shabaab near Jilib (Middle Juba region) on Friday, April 10. The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) stated that the strike carried out on April 9 killed ten militants whilst the strike on April 10 killed one.

Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
