Albania: 6.4-magnitude earthquake hits near Shijak November 26

Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) registered a 6.4-magnitude earthquake northwest of Shijak, near Tirana, at around 02:54 (local time) on Tuesday, November 26. According to the USGS, the quake hit at a depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was located at approximately at 41°N 19°E. No tsunami warning has been immediately issued by officials. A USGS representative said that the earthquake is likely to have caused damage and casualties, although officials did not immediately report either. 

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
