DRC: Militants clash with soldiers in Irumu (Ituri province) April 4

At least seven killed during clashes between soldiers and militants in Irumu (Ituri province) on April 4; similar clashes possible in the area over the near term

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) engaged suspected militants in Irumu (Ituri province) on Saturday, April 4. According to military officials, at least four militants and three civilians were killed in the fighting, which occurred between 20:00-22:00 (local time). The FARDC is reportedly searching for militants who fled the area.

Further clashes between FARDC soldiers and militants are possible in the coming weeks.

Context

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, have led to continued insecurity in the area. Violence has flared up in recent years, with large attacks recorded in Ituri province between 2017-2020.
