Ethiopia: Fuel shortages reported nationwide on December 23

Fuel shortages across Ethiopia as of December 23; transportation and other disruptions possible

Warning

Event

A fuel shortage is affecting Ethiopia's main cities as of Monday, December 23, resulting in long lines at gas stations, as well as transportation disruptions in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Mekele, Adama, and Gondar. The reason for the shortage remains unclear. It is currently unknown as to when the situation will return to normal. Associated protests cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals present in Ethiopia are advised to fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, and expect longer waiting times at gas stations. Keep in mind that crime rates tend to rise after nightfall in areas without street lighting, and be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning. Generally speaking, individuals throughout the country are advised to avoid all demonstrations and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
