Somalia: AMISOM convoy attacked between Balad and Mogadishu Apil 9

Event

At least two African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) personnel were injured in a suspected Al-Shabaab militant attack which targeted an AMISOM convoy on Thursday, April 9, in the Hareeri Caadle area between Bal'ad and the capital Mogadishu. According to social media reports, the AMISOM convoy struck an improvised explosive device (IED), damaging at least one armoured vehicle belonging to the security forces. Reports also suggest that the militants used gunfire against them and the troops repulsed the attack.

Although no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Al-Shabaab militants are known for planting roadside bombs and landmines to target Somali security forces.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area in the near term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
