Army recovers territory from suspected CODECO militants in Djugu and Mahagi (Ituri province) April 8-17; further security operations possible over the near term

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) recovered 14 localities in Ituri province from suspected CODECO militants in operations that took place between Wednesday, April 8, and Friday, April 17. Territories were recovered in Djugu and Mahagi, where thousands of civilians have been displaced due to recent violence. It was not immediately clear whether any casualties were sustained during the operations.

Further military operations are possible oveer the near term, and militant attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the area.
