Indonesia: Flooding kills seven people in North Sumatra January 29

A state of emergency was declared in Central Tapanuli regency (North Sumatra province) on Wednesday, January 29, after deadly flash flooding and landslides hit several communities. Heavy rains hit the area during the early morning hours (local time) of Wednesday, causing flooding that left at least seven people dead and over 22 people injured. Homes and public infrastructure were also damaged and some roads were obstructed. Additional rainfall is forecast in North Sumatra on Thursday, January 30, and Friday, January 31.

Further flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions are possible, as well as disruptions to power and communication services over the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
