Libya: GNA forces shoot down drone near Abugrein April 19

Government of National Accord (GNA) forces reportedly shoot down suspected UAE-provided drone near Abugrein on April 19; further fighting possible over the coming days

Informational

Event

Forces under the command of the Government of National Accord (GNA) reported that they shot down a Wing Loong II drone as it was striking targets near Abugrein, about 120 km (75 mi) from Misrata, on Sunday, April 19. The GNA claimed that the UAE provided the drone to Libyan National Army (LNA) forces.

Additional clashes are possible in the area over the coming hours and days.

Context

Members of the international community continue to try to broker a ceasefire and political agreement between the GNA and the LNA. A ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia was announced on January 12, but has failed to gain traction and is no longer considered to be in effect.

Advice

Individuals in Libya are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid areas affected by the fighting, and refrain from nonessential movement within the country.
