Libya: Clashes reported in Tripoli February 13

Event

Multiple civilian casualties were reported in Tripoli on Thursday, February 13, amid renewed clashes between the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA). A GNA spokesman confirmed the fighting, which occurred in the vicinity of Machrou al-Hadhba, located approximately 30 km (18 mi) south of the Tripoli city center. Operations at Mitiga International Airport (MIJ) were suspended for several hours on Thursday as a result of the clashes. Flight operations have resumed as of early (local time) Friday, February 14. 

Further fighting is to be expected in and around Tripoli over the near term.

Context

Members of the international community continue to try to broker a ceasefire and political agreement between the GNA and the LNA. A ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia was announced on January 12, but localized breaches are ongoing, and tensions remain high.

The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and GNA airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.

Individuals in Tripoli and those traveling via Mitiga International Airport (MJI) are advised to monitor the situation, confirm flight reservations, avoid areas affected by fighting, maintain safe and current evacuation plans, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
