Heavy rainfall causes significant transportation disruptions in Kigali January 28; heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding expected in Southern and Eastern provinces January 31-February 1

Warning

Event

Business and transportation disruptions were reported in Kigali as heavy rainfall hit the city on the morning (local time) of Tuesday, January 28. Severe traffic congestion and business closures were reported across the capital due to the downpour.

On Monday, January 27, Rwanda's weather agency issued a weather alert warning about heavy rainfall that is forecast to affect Southern and Eastern provinces from Friday, January 31, to Saturday, February 1. Officials expect the weather system to bring heavy winds and 25-55 mm (1-2 in) of rain. Associated flooding and landslides are possible over the near term.

Transportation and commercial disruptions are expected in the affected areas over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
