US: Severe flooding in Mississippi state February 17

Event

Severe flooding was reported across central Mississippi state, including in the capital Jackson, on Monday, February 17, following heavy rainfall. The Pearl River in Jackson reportedly crested at 11 m (37 ft) on Monday, which is the third highest crest ever recorded. Hundreds of homes have been damaged and roads throughout the capital are covered in water. Some roadways have reopened as of Tuesday, February 18; however, rainfall is expected to continue statewide through Tuesday night (local time). As a result, several areas in central Mississippi remain under a flash flood warning as of Tuesday morning.

Continued transportation disruptions, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are expected over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in Mississippi state are advised to monitor local weather reports, prepare for significant transportation disruptions (including road closures) and power outages, confirm travel itineraries, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
