Bolivia: Workers march against election delays in El Alto July 28

Protest organized by unions held in El Alto (La Paz department) over election delays on July 28; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution

A union-led protest march took place in El Alto (La Paz department) on Tuesday, July 28, over delays to the presidential election. Thousands of people participated in the march, organized by the Bolivian Workers' Center (COB). Reports indicate that the protest passed off peacefully.

Further protests regarding the issue are possible in El Alto and across Bolivia in the near term.

The 2019 general election led to a political crisis and widespread protests, culminating in the resignation of President Evo Morales. The 2020 election was originally scheduled for May 3, then pushed back to September 6, and subsequently October 18 due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Individuals in Bolivia are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
