At least three Mai-Mai militiamen were killed after the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) launched attacks in the Kiavirimu and Kananza localities of North Kivu province on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. According to reports, FARDC troops launched an attack in Kiavirimu on Friday night which resulted in two fighters killed. A second operation was launched at approximately 03:00 (local time) on Saturday morning, which resulted in one other fighter killed. Security forces recovered weapons during the operations.
Further security operations are likely in the region over the near term. Attacks on government soldiers are also possible.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the area.
Those in North Kivu province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
