Heavy rain and flooding continue in Kelantan and Terengganu as of December 3; evacuations and transportation disruption reported

Warning

Event

Heavy rains and flooding have prompted evacuations, power outages, and transportation disruptions in the Kelantan and Terengganu provinces as heavy rainfall continues on Tuesday, December 3. At least 15,126 people have been evacuated and at least two fatalities have been reported.

The Malaysian Meteorological Bureau (MMB) has issued a severe weather warning for Terengganu on Monday, December 2, as rain is likely to continue in Terengganu and Kelantan through Tuesday evening. Further flood warnings have been issued in several flood-prone areas in the state of Pahang.

Further flooding, landslides, and mudslides are possible in the abovementioned areas. Associated transportation and business disruptions, including possible rail and flight delays or cancelations are likely.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
