Police in Dakar deployed tear gas as students protested at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) on Monday, December 9. Students threw projectiles at security forces amid demonstrations to denounce the arrest of five of their colleagues in recent protests to protest electricity price hikes.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are likely over the coming hours. Further protests are possible in the coming days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
