As of the morning (local time) on Monday, January 13, additional security forces have been deployed in various parts of Kisangani (Tshopo Province), ahead of a protest called by motorcycle taxi drivers to denounce a new registration tax. Several shops will reportedly remain closed due to the risk of violence between police forces and protesters. According to official sources, police are blocking Church Avenue where the Congo Palace Hotel is located due to calls by protesters to target it. Taxi drivers may be joined by Kisangani market sellers, who seek to protest increased taxation.

An increased security presence, as well as localized traffic disruptions, are likely throughout the day. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
