Kenya: Heavy rains forecast for western Kenya December 3-7

Kenya Meteorological Department warns of heavy rains in western parts of the country, including Nairobi, December 3-7; flooding and associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Heavy rain is forecast across western and southern parts of Kenya from Tuesday, December 3, through Saturday, December 7. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, over 10 cm (4 in) of cumulative rainfall is expected through the week, including in Nairobi. Weather officials are warning residents to prepare for flooding and landslides, particularly in low-lying areas. Associated transportation and business disruptions, including road closures, are possible over the coming days.

Nairobi and the surrounding area have been experiencing flooding since Saturday, November 30. Roads throughout the capital have been inundated, including portions of the Thika Superhighway. Emergency crews deployed to unclog drainage systems, but further rains will likely exacerbate the current situation.

Advice

Individuals in Kenya are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
