Warning

Event

The Noo Lank civil society group has called for protests in Tivaouane, on Tuesday, December 31, to denounce the increased price of electricity. The protest will also look to demand the release of an activist arrested on Friday, November 29, in a related protest. The time and location of the protest was not immediately available. While authorities have reportedly issued a ban on all protests, gatherings remain likely. In addition, a related nationwide protest has been called for Friday, January 10, 2020.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near any demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Related protests have been held across the country on December 13, 20, 27 and 29. On December 20, security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowds as authorities had banned the protest.

Advice

Individuals in Thiès region are advised to monitor developments of the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
