Somalia: Local governor killed in Al-Shabaab suicide bombing March 30
Al-Shabaab claims responsibility for suicide bomb attack which killed the local governor of Nugaal on March 30; further attacks possible in the near term

The local governor of Nugaal in northeastern Somalia, was killed in a suicide bombing at a police station in Garowe on Monday, March 30. According to initial reports, the attacker rushed towards the governor's vehicle and subsequently detonated his suicide vest. Nugaal Governor Abdisalan Hassan Hersi succumbed to his wounds after being rushed to the hospital in Garowe. A soldier and former police commander were also reportedly wounded in the blast and in hospital. The Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the coming days.
