Suspected Islamist militants launched an attacked in Piqueue (Cabo Delgado province) on Thursday, February 7, killing seven people and abducting four others. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Monday, February 11, although the Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) group is suspected. Heightened security measures are expected throughout the province in the near term as similar attacks are possible.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
