Gambia: Demonstration scheduled in Banjul December 16

Event

According to US diplomatic authorities, a demonstration is scheduled to be held in Banjul on Monday, December 16, to denounce the possible extension of President Adama Barrow's term in office. Participants are expected to gather at Westfield Junction at 10:00 (local time) before marching towards Denton Bridge. The demonstration has been authorized by local officials.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near the protest site.

Context

Barrow came to power in 2017 after longtime incumbent Yahya Jammeh was forced into exile. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) stipulated that Barrow would serve for just three years as a transitional president before new elections could be held. However, Barrow has since indicated that the MOU should not override the five-year term set out in the constitution.
