A shooting near the FSB building in central Moscow leaves one dead and five injured December 19; incident being treated as an “act of terrorism”

A lone gunman opened fire near the Federal Security Service (FSB) building in central Moscow at approximately 18:00 (local time) on Thursday, December 19, killing one FSB employee and wounding at least five others, according to Russia's health ministry. Police were able to neutralize the gunman at approximately 19:20 on Thursday evening. According to local media sources, the FSB is treating the incident as an act of terrorism. Also, notably, police carried out a controlled explosion of a suspected explosive device left near the FSB building following the attack. Investigations are ongoing as of Thursday night.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions, including road closures, are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.
