Opposition UPND party call for nationwide demonstrations on October 21 to show solidarity with their leader amid police scrutiny; avoid large gatherings as a precaution

Warning

Event

The United Party of National Development's Youth League (UPND) has called for nationwide peaceful demonstrations on Wednesday, October 21, to show solidarity with the party leader Hakainde Hichilema. Reports indicate that organizers of the action have called for a 1000-vehicle procession to Mpika (Muchinga province), where Hichilema is due to face questioning by police at 09:00 (local time) on Wednesday. Party supporters believe the hearing is designed to undermine Hichilema's position to participate in the 2021 general elections.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement are possible.

Advice

Those in Zambia area advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and aggressive crowd dispersal operations by security forces. Travelers should monitor developments and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
