Kuwait: Emir Sheikh Sabah dies on September 29

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah dies on September 29; disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah died on Tuesday, September 29, following months of illness. A period of mourning is expected, but officials are yet to detail what it will consist of and how long it will last. The death of Emir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in 2006, the last Emir to die in office, resulted in a 40-day period of mourning and the closure of government offices for three days.

Significant disruptions are likely in Kuwait over the near term. Large gatherings are likely as Kuwaiti citizens mourn the Emir's passing.

Advice

Those in Kuwait are advised to maintain a heightened level of situational awareness in the medium term, remaining respectful and avoiding discussing sensitive topics in public. Travelers should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any disruption in their particular area of operations.
